Staying Active in Amsterdam

In line with the healthy, active lifestyle of Amsterdam, physical development is a core pillar of life in the Junior School. We aim to help every child find joy in movement, develop positive social attitudes, and build lifelong habits of physical wellbeing.

Weekly PE Lessons

All Junior School students participate in two Physical Education (PE) lessons each week. To provide expert guidance, one of these weekly lessons is led by a specialised sports coach, focusing on spatial awareness, physical coordination, motor skills, and sports mechanics.
Extensive After-School Sports
Students playing basketball
Outside of the classroom, children have the opportunity to join a wide variety of after-school sports activities daily. These range from individual disciplines like karate, kayaking, and dance, to traditional competitive team sports like football, basketball, and rowing.
Traditional Sports Day
Students running outdoors
Once a year, we host a traditional, high-energy Sports Day for students in Years 2 to 6. Grouped into their house teams, children compete in various games, relays, and athletic races to earn house points—fostering friendly competition, sportsmanship, and school pride.

Explore Our Dutch Swimming Programme

Living in a city famous for its historic canals, water safety is a vital life skill. At the BSA, we ensure our students are completely safe and confident in the water through our integrated swimming programme.

For students in Year 3 and upwards, our curriculum includes a specialised, half-year swimming programme. Lessons are held at the nearby Mirandabad Pool in Amsterdam-Zuid, delivered by professional Dutch swimming instructors. The curriculum follows the prestigious official Dutch National Swimming Diploma system (covering Levels A, B, and C++), guaranteeing that students develop robust survival techniques alongside traditional stroke mechanics.
