House System | The British School of Amsterdam

A True British Tradition Rooted in Amsterdam

In British education, it is typical to have a house system. A house system divides students, and our school staff too, into groups, or 'houses,' fostering a deep sense of belonging and community within the school. This welcoming structure encourages active participation in a wide variety of events, promoting teamwork, school spirit, and a shared sense of personal achievement. It provides key leadership opportunities, allowing students to develop responsibility and collaboration, while healthy competition among houses motivates students to excel both academically and in sports. Inclusivity ensures that all students, regardless of ability, can contribute and feel valued.

Named After the Historic Canals

All students from Year 1 onwards belong to one of four houses, named after the most famous and beautiful historic canals of Amsterdam:

  • Singel (Yellow)
  • Herengracht (Green)
  • Keizersgracht (Red)
  • Prinsengracht (Blue)

The Leadership Journey

Early Years

Early Years (Year 1 Introduction)

We introduce the children to the house system in Year 1. This provides a wonderful opportunity for them to socialise with children in different classes, building early confidence and beautifully preparing them for more house activities when they enter the Junior School.
Junior School

Junior School (Years 2 to 6)

Students earn house points daily for good behaviour, excellent work, genuine friendships, and showing consideration to others, receiving certificates for various point totals throughout the year. A weekly house points competition features our Year 6 house captains contending proudly for the cup. Houses are actively involved in regular team games, sports day, theme week competitions, and special summer term activities.
Senior School

Senior School (Years 7 to 13)

In the Senior School, students wear different coloured stripes on their school ties to denote their house alignment. Inter-house competitions take place throughout the academic year, building momentum towards the awarding of the grand House Cup after sports day. The winning house celebrates their victory with a highly anticipated house away day excursion.
