Empowering the Leaders of Tomorrow
At The British School of Amsterdam, we prepare young people not just to succeed in an ever-changing world, but to confidently lead it.
Philosophy
True leadership is an active, practical skill that must be nurtured. We do not believe in asking what the school can do for our students, but rather what our students can do for their community. Through our structured leadership pathways, we encourage pupils across all age groups to find their voice, take on genuine responsibilities, and collaborate to solve complex challenges.
From guiding peers as a House Captain to debating global policy at Model United Nations, leadership at the BSA is accessible, celebrated, and deeply rewarding.
| Roles & Responsibilities |
Finding Your Voice: Student RolesWe provide a wealth of opportunities for students to develop their confidence and represent their peers. From the Junior School through to the Sixth Form, students can apply for a variety of formal leadership positions:
|
| The House System |
Leading by ExampleA cherished British tradition rooted in our host city, our House System divides students and staff into four distinct groups named after Amsterdam’s historic canals: Singel, Herengracht, Keizersgracht, and Prinsengracht. This welcoming structure fosters a deep sense of belonging and school spirit. It provides essential leadership opportunities at every stage of school life:
|
| Global Diplomacy |
Model United Nations (MUN)We are exceptionally proud of our Model United Nations (MUN) programme, which empowers our older students to step into the shoes of global diplomats. By simulating international diplomacy, students develop advanced critical thinking, analytical research, and high-level public speaking skills. MUN encourages our future leaders to engage thoughtfully with complex global challenges—from food security to technology—understand diverse cultural perspectives, and practice the art of peaceful negotiation. Not only do our students participate in prestigious MUN events across Europe, but they also host BSAMUN, our very own student-led, multi-day international conference right here at our Havenstraat campus. |
| Resilience & Outdoor Leadership |
The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award (DofE)For students in Year 10 and above, the BSA offers official enrolment in the internationally renowned Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Scheme. Under the expert guidance of our dedicated DofE Lead, students can work toward the prestigious Bronze and Silver awards. The DofE scheme requires a sustained personal commitment across volunteering services, physical fitness, specialised skill acquisition, and a multi-day outdoor expedition. Through this exceptional framework, our students challenge their personal boundaries, build immense lifelong resilience, and develop the adaptability needed to successfully navigate adult life. |
